Paul Giorgio: I Don’t Give a Duck!

Thursday, December 26, 2013

I can't believe that I am writing about Phil Robertson the head of the family on Duck Dynasty, an A&E network show about a bunch of backwoods rednecks in rural Louisiana.

The difference with these rednecks is that they are college graduates and multi-millionaires. Their wealth came from their company Duck Commander, whose major product is a duck call. They have built on that and now have other product lines and hunting gear.

A couple of weeks ago Phil Robertson, the major character and family head gave an interview to GQ magazine in which he attacked Gays, made some insensitive racist remarks about Blacks, Muslims and even attacked the Japanese.

The A&E Network immediately suspended him from the show, which was no small act since Duck Dynasty is the highest rated cable show ever. Then again what is the competition, Honey Boo Boo, Toddlers & Tiaras and Amish Mafia. Have we sunken so low that this is what we are watching?

No less an expert on American culture than Sara Palin, the onetime mayor of Wasilla Alaska and the states half term Governor came to Robertson defense critiquing the network for the suspension. Palin who has never let consistency get in the way of publicity had a different view on network censorship several weeks ago when MSNBC fired Martin Bashar for making off color remarks about Palin.

The Cracker Barrel Restaurant chain entered the fray this past weekend when they pulled some Duck Dynasty products off their shelves. The right wingers immediately called for a boycott of the restaurant chain.

Isn’t this a free speech issue for Cracker Barrel? Or does the far right only believe that free speech exists for them?

And why does the right wing in this country constantly come to the defense of right wing nuts? I hope it is not because they share the same views.

Sara Palin and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal both claim this is a free speech issue.it is not.

It is interesting how Palin only believes in right wing free speech. She should also demand that Martin Bashar be returned to the airways so he can once again start making fun of her. But that would be asking too much.

Right wing or left wing bigotry or racism has no place in America.

Robertson can have his views but A&E does not have to give him money or create a celebrity cult in order for him to gain an audience for his backwoods and backwards view of America. If he wasn't the star of this ridiculous reality show, no one would pay any attention to this backwoods right winger.

In the spirit of research, I actually watched a couple of episodes this weekend. One of them had family members fishing for Catfish, then gutting them and trying to sell the fish on the side of the road. It ended with them throwing fish guts at each other.

In this season of giving maybe Robertson, Palin, Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh should all reflect on the message of Christmas, which they claim is under attack and the message of the Christ child.

I will quote Luke 2:14 from the King James Bible:

Glory to god in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.

Arbitron Ratings Scandal

In 2008, radio host John DePetro found himself in the midst of a ratings controversy.  The Boston Herald reported,

The briefly stellar ratings of controversy-dogged-talkmeister John DePetro’s Providence radio show tanked yesterday after a whiff of scandal forced Arbitron to reissue its spring survey of listener-dial habits.

In the 6 to 10 a.m. weekday slot occupied by the self-proclaimed “Independent Man” on WPRO-AM (630), “the reissue ranked WPRO at number nine” among valued 25- to 54-year-old listeners, “down from the number four rank in the original release,” program manager Paul Giammarco and station market manager Barbara Haynes announced in a joint statement.

You are so unoriginal, you couldn't even come up with a different or imaginative title for you bigoted propaganda.

Did the Podesta brown shirts give you your marching orders?

Did you, Mr. Clintonite, ever give Bashir any grief for his Palin bashing or is it common practice for Democrats to be misogynists?

What, no full article about Baldwin's anti-gay rant?

Typical progressive with selective intolerance

Paul, if you're going to be a columnist, you've got to work on your facts; and if you're going to be a liberal, you've got to work on your liberal principles.

The spelling is Martin Bashir.

Bashir and his scripted, producer-approved monologue called for someone to defecate in Sarah Palin's mouth. This is hardly just "making off color remarks..." as you write. (Also, the spelling is "Sarah.") Bashir had a free-speech right to say what he said, but that was some disgusting thinking going on in his and his colleagues' minds.

As for tolerance, calling the Robertson family "a bunch of backwoods rednecks..." sounds like intolerant hate speech according to liberal tenets.

C'mon man... get it together.

Phil Paulson

I don't care what anyone says on either side. Everyone has the right to say anything they want about anyone they want. I, however, also have the right to take my business elsewhere, just as A&E, Cracker Barrel, MSNBC or any other business has the right to associate or disassociate with anyone they choose too. I believe Cracker Barrel has since put the products back on their shelves due to the support their customer base has shown Mr. Robertson. That's their right. If you want to boycott any of these companies, that's your right as well.

Sammy Arizona

A video has just surfaced in which the loony Phil Robertson offers more harsh comments about gays. In the video, Robertson says that Gay folks will receive the "due penalty for their perversions." He goes on to say that they are full of "murder, envy, strife, hatred. They are insolent, arrogant, god-haters. They are heartless. They are faithless. They are senseless. They are ruthless. They invent ways of doing evil."

But he is not judging them.... Remember that..LOL
He is still "free" to go repeat himself on Fox News and all the other professional victim outlets that the righties are so enamored with. We all know how conservative rubes just love to play the victim card.

Happy Holidays..Sammy in Arizona

JARED STUBBD

I would suggest that one should read the GQ interview and decide for them selves what is so awful about Mr Robertson's words. I did not read any attack on anyone Japanese in that interview. Mr. Robertson did refer to WWII history stating that under Shinto leadership Japan committed many murderous acts. I think that history supports that statement. When an author tries to denigrate, ("backwoods rednecks") it points out his own slanted agenda.

JOJO MONKEY

I DON'T GIVE A RATS AZZ WHAT Phil Robertson SAYS OR WHAT Paul Giorgio SAYS..LIVE AND LET LIVE AND LEAVE ME THE BLANK ALONE!..We have bigger fish to fry in this country! While y'all are being deliberately distracted by all this nonsense we take our attention away from the day to day destruction of our lives as the government pulls the rug out from under us and drives a stake through our wallet!
